We successfully delivered the internal painting and decorating package on an impressive new extra care development in Workington for Atkinsons Building Contractors.
The scheme for end user, Riverside Group was designed to offer a mix of supported housing and social housing for the local community. The project was managed in two phases with phase one comprising of 28 affordable rent bungalows and phase two being the supported housing building, featuring 79 modern one and two bedroomed extra care apartments with communal facilities including a restaurant, salon and launderette as well as offices, meeting rooms and back of house areas.
The project scope on phase two encompassed all internal painting and decoration work across three levels, including approximately 21,000m2 of walls and ceilings, 17,000lm of woodwork, as well as feature metalwork and BOH floor areas. Design details were carefully chosen to meet the varying care needs of residents including those suffering with Dementia. Each level was given a different colour scheme to aid navigation and memory shelves were added outside each apartment.
We used a range of premium, durable Johnstone’s paint products including Covaplus Vinyl Matt in brilliant white throughout the 79 apartments, four staircores, communal areas and BOH areas. We used Johnstone’s Microbar Antibacterial Acrylic Durable Matt in brilliant white in the bathrooms and Johnstone’s Aqua WB Satin on the woodwork, which included door frames, architraves and skirtings.
In the corridors we used Dulux Heritage Emulsion and Farrow and Ball Estate Emulsion, with two feature colours for each level. We also applied a range of luxury Tektura and Romo wallcoverings to four feature areas on each level. To the 600lm of corridor handrails, we applied Johnstone’s Quick Dry Satin Wood Stain in Walnut, and we also used Johnstone’s Smooth Metal paint for the staircase balustrades. Lastly, we applied Johnstone’s epoxy floor paint to four BOH areas.
We effectively managed the disposal of waste on the project by recycling all empty paint tubs through the Johnstone’s Recycling Scheme.
Our highly experienced project management and on-site team included a Contracts Manager and a full time Supervisor, who worked collaboratively with Atkinsons to ensure that high levels of communication, safety, organisation, quality and efficiency were maintained throughout the project.
Our team once again delivered a high-quality finish to budget with our usual care and attention to detail, and we were praised by Atkinsons Site Manager for our level of service and quality and our “exceptional wallpaper application” on the project.
