Edinburgh University Data Technology Institute

We were appointed by McLaughlin & Harvey to complete the specialist internal decoration package at Edinburgh University’s £45m flagship Data Technology Institute (DTI) building, now known as The Bayes Centre.

The project formed the third and final phase of the award winning Potterow development, comprising of a new connected building with six floors of accommodation around a striking feature staircase and atrium, and with a total internal floor area of approximately 9,400 m2.

On the project we used a Johnstone’s Trade specification throughout to prepare and decorate the partition walls and woodwork, areas of acoustic boarding, the spiral feature staircase, atrium staircase and various feature ceilings. We also completed the sealing of concrete walls and columns.

On this project there was a significant volume of painted skirting to be decorated and we were able to utilise our purpose-built Story Offsite Spray Facility to deliver a top quality, factory-finished product as well as additional cost and logistics benefits to the client.

Post completion, the building has been used as a new innovation hub for data science and robotics bringing together researchers, students, start-up’s and organisations. Within the building are laboratories, offices with breakout spaces, a variety of teaching spaces including lecture areas and a café. This was an exceptional project to be a part of, that ultimately created a building that is not only visually stunning but that is also highly functional, providing a comfortable, durable and adaptable space that is cost-effective to maintain.
