Building upon SDG’s considerable experience within the Education sector, we were appointed by Main Contractors, Tilbury Douglas to complete the internal decoration of a new, multimillion-pound redevelopment of All Saints’ Roman Catholic High School in Rawtenstall, as part of the Department for Education’s School Rebuilding Programme.

The state-of-the-art facility on Haslingden Road was designed to high sustainability and net-zero targets within the grounds of the old school, which was later demolished.

Our scope of work within the 3-story, 45,700 sq. ft building included the painting and decoration of classrooms, corridors, staircases, the main hall, drama studio, design technology workshop, science labs, dining hall and kitchen, showers and WC’s and BOH areas.

We used a range of high-performance Dulux paint products to provide durable, cleanable and hygienic finishes across the building. These included Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry paint to the exposed concrete soffits, and Dulux Airsure Diamond Matt and Dulux Diamond Eggshell (tinted) to the plasterboard walls. In areas requiring a hygienic finish, we used Dulux Sterishield Diamond Eggshell and to the ceilings and bulkheads above the showers and WC’s we applied Dulux Mouldshield Fungicidal Eggshell Matt. We applied Dulux High Gloss paint to the wooden skirting, window boards and architraves. We also used a Watco system to prepare and paint the floors within the plant room.

From commencing work on site, our experienced project team and site team worked closely with the client to ensure all health and safety compliance and quality standards were met. Our Contracts Manager and full-time working Supervisor ensured attendance of all progress meetings and DABS meetings, completed internal H&S site inspections and audits every 10 working days, submitted Friday packs to the client containing H&S monitoring forms, handover sheets, plant returns, toolbox talk records, recycling scheme paperwork and any other H&S documentation and information relating the project. Our exemplary efforts in this area were recognised by Tilbury Douglas when our Supervisor was presented with a Safety award for his hard work and conscientiousness on the job.

Throughout the project, we managed the disposal of waste by recycling all empty paint tubs through Dulux’s Recycling Scheme.

When challenges arose around defects with the flooring product, we worked with the client and the manufacturer to communicate all issues and resolve the matter swiftly. Our site team also took a proactive approach to labour coordination and collaboration with other trades to ensure that any delivery issues were mitigated. Overall, this was a great example of a well-executed and well managed project, generating positive feedback from the client and creating an enhanced learning environment for the pupils.
