After securing two prestigious awards earlier in the year, our work on the Haymarket project in Edinburgh has now been shortlisted in the Construction News Specialist Awards for the ‘Project of the Year by a Specialist Contractor (Sub-contract from £2m to £5m)’ category.
The Haymarket Square project, in collaboration with main contractor, Sir Robert McAlpine and client, Qmile Group comprised painting and decorating of the B4/B5 buildings within this iconic city centre site.
A truly remarkable project to be involved with, our works included taping and jointing, preparation and application of decorative and specialist finishes to the two 8-storey office blocks and the impressive central atrium, in total covering some 110,000sq ft. Offices, ground floor café facilities, meeting rooms, events spaces, break out areas, reception areas, kitchen facilities, corridors and staircores and a bike store area were all included in the package, yet what made the project more unique was the many unusual design features such as the complex acoustic ceiling panels and lift shafts.
Globally renowned architect, Foster + Partners laid out a stylish and bold vision for the internal design specification, to achieve beautiful yet functional workspaces within the city, to help attract and retain talent. Overall the end result was spectacular, and our team worked tirelessly to ensure the highest quality finish was achieved, within budget and according to programme.
In April the Haymarket project won us the coveted ‘Supreme Winner’ title at the annual Johnstone’s Painter of the Year Awards, which was voted for on the night by our industry peers. The project also achieved a ‘Very Highly Commended’ award at the Painting and Decorating Association Premier Trophy Awards in July. In September, we will be attending the CN Specialist Awards in the hope of securing another win.
“This means everything,” explains Claire Story, Associate Director. “We are a very specialist contractor and being the final finishing trade means our work is what the eye sees. Many people overlook the work that goes into the decoration of a building. We often enter industry awards and have been recognised frequently within our sector, but to be shortlisted in the CN Specialist Awards is next level. To be recognised not only in the decorating industry but across the construction sector will hopefully raise the profile of the hard work we do and attract people to work both for us and with us.”
